Hi there!

I am Lucía, a researcher, advisor, and advocate of feminist and decolonial approaches to technology. Currently, I do it from three spaces: as a PhD candidate in Cultural Studies at the University of Giessen (in Germany), as coordinator of Gender and Technology at the feminist research collective Ladysmith, and as an independent researcher, consultant, and activist.

My research focuses on the epistemological, material, and ethical impacts, implications, and possibilities of using AI to address social issues (often called 'AI for Good') and on its role in reproducing or resisting the modern/colonial order. It lies at the intersection of post/decolonial studies, science and technology studies, gender studies, and critical development studies. I am very fortunate to have Stefan Peters and Paola Ricaurte as my supervisors and to receive funding from the DAAD. Outside of my formal PhD project, I also have Lorena Fuentes and Andrei Gómez-Suárez as mentors. I am deeply grateful to all of them and admire them a lot. I don't imagine being here without that strong support.

I was born in Bucaramanga, Colombia, and have lived most of my life in the capital, Bogotá. I have been privileged enough (and thanks to the effort of my parents) to live for a while in New York City, where I did an internship at the UN, and in London for my Master's in Postcolonial Studies (funded by Chevening), where I examined the necropolitics of the killing of social leaders in Colombia as a legacy of colonial logics. I am now based in Giessen, Germany, navigating life as a migrant and a student, and accompanied by my beautiful wife, cat, and dog.

I care about life in all its forms, and the injustices of the world hurt me a lot. I strive to have community, and I have built and nurtured communities before around our love for Harry Potter (didn't age well 😅), peacebuilding in Colombia, and data feminism. I have spent quite a bit of time reflecting and practicing dialogue, which forms a key part of who I am. I also like to read science fiction and fantasy, play board games, watch tv shows (more than movies), and everything related to electronic music (listening to it, going to raves and festivals, producing, playing). I recently completed training as a DJ-producer and would like to play more.

I am always happy to chat about any topic, connect with like-minded people, and collaborate! Feel free to contact me with anything you want to say 😉

Non-Academic Projects and Publications

I am a feminist and decolonial researcher interested in the intersection between decoloniality, feminism and technology

I study, teach and advise on the implications of using AI, data and digital technologies for solving social issues, including in the governmental, international development and humanitarian fields.

I am currently researching, as a PhD candidate, the ethical and governance considerations of the use of AI to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (mainly in the so-called "Global South").

I am open to collaborations within the fields of feminist STS, decoloniality, and critical development studies. I can offer my services as a guest lecturer, workshop leader, and advisor, too. After all, there are few better sweeter things in life than sharing knowledge.
